WNU opens in Bath

The cult shirt label With Nothing Underneath opens its first Bath store tonight, on the corner of New Bond Street and New Bond Street Place.

If you caught WNU’s two-day pop-up at The Royal Crescent Hotel last November, you’ll know Bath took to it quickly. Now the brand has a permanent home in the city, behind a freshly painted white shopfront at 11 New Bond Street. The window line sums it up: British heritage meets modern simplicity.

Bath joins a small family of WNU stores in Belgravia, Marylebone, Notting Hill and Salcombe. For a brand built on understated British dressing, a Georgian corner in Bath feels like a natural fit.

Who are WNU?

With Nothing Underneath was founded in 2017 by Pip Durell, a former Tatler editor and Vogue stylist. She started with one product: a shirt borrowed from men’s tailoring and recut for women, meant to be worn without overthinking it.

The brand has since grown into a full wardrobe of knits, jeans, trousers and tailoring, but the shirt is still the heart of it. WNU is a certified B Corp, and its pieces are stocked at Liberty and Harrods.

Inside the store

Step inside and it feels less like a shop and more like a well-loved country house. A towering oak dresser carries the brand’s name in white script across its cornice, its pigeonholes stacked with folded denim, tartan shirts and cable knits. The drawers below are labelled by fabric: Cotton, Denim, Oxford.

Beside it sits an antique writing bureau with a Windsor chair, a burgundy lamp and a few well-thumbed books on wild flowers. Framed campaign portraits hang on the white walls.

Upstairs, tall sash windows look out over the honey-coloured stone of New Bond Street. Two ticking-stripe armchairs sit on a faded Persian rug, and black-and-white photographs hang from brass chains above slim iron rails. A pair of gilt-framed hunting prints hangs on pinstriped walls by the fitting rooms, which are tucked behind striped curtains, with coir matting underfoot and wall lights with little cream shades.

It’s a space that invites you to linger, which is exactly the point.

What to shop

Shirts lead, as you’d expect. The rails run from crisp blue and pink poplin to bold candy stripes, contrast white collars and cuffs, and a strong run of tartan and windowpane checks for autumn.

Around them is everything you’d want to wear with a good shirt:

  • Knitwear in forest green, oatmeal and chunky cream cable, plus a striped knit in caramel and mustard
  • Denim in mid-blue and ecru, and a denim jacket with contrast embroidery
  • Tailoring, from navy trousers to tweed jackets
  • Accessories, including WNU baseball caps, canvas totes and a soft burgundy scarf

It’s an edit designed for the way people dress in Bath: relaxed, polished and built to last.
